TRAINING AT FLOW

Our teaching and training philosophy

It takes a village to raise a martial artist.

Flow Martial Arts is a community-focused dojo fuelled by teamwork and hard work.

Why Train at Flow

  • Small classes. At Flow, no one falls through the cracks. You’ll know everyone in the room and get personalized coaching.

  • Modern approach. Flow classes marry tradition and innovation. Our students get a well-rounded martial arts education that combines traditional forms and pioneering new school techniques.

  • Welcoming atmosphere. Combat sports are serious business, but they should be enjoyable too. We strive to keep classes fun and students engaged, while upholding the respect that martial arts demands.

Our Values

Martial arts as a team sport

Martial arts isn’t just a game of ‘you against them;’ It’s you against you: your mindset, emotions, and perceived limitations.

And that’s why we see martial arts as a team sport. Just as steel sharpens steel, the person who taps you just helped you improve. We high-five and fist-bump before we spar. We touch gloves — win or lose.

Growth mindset

At Flow, we train to learn, not just to win. We believe in failing forward, failing often, and that consistency trumps talent every time.

Students are trained physically in combat and self-defense and mentally in growth mindset and resilience. That means learning to get up when you’re knocked down —time and time again.

Live by the blackbelt principles

Our goal is to create blackbelts both on — and off — the mats. That’s why Flow students live by the blackbelt principles: modesty, courtesy, integrity, self-control, perseverance, and indomitable spirit.

For kids at the dojo, it’s “Yes, sir. No, sir.” We expect respect for teachers and parents at all times.

No participation ribbons

Blackbelts are forged through adversity. Flow students work for every stripe, belt, and bruise, supported by teachers who will safely encourage them beyond their comfort zone.

We don’t bubblewrap our kids. Stripes are taken away for bad behavior and push-ups are issued for poor listening. Students advance in rank when they’ve demonstrated they’ve earned it.

Movement as a lifestyle

Locomotion is necessary for mental and physical health — and yet, it’s hard to prioritize in our increasingly sedentary, online culture.

At Flow, we strive to make all students see movement as necessary as breathing. Our mission is to help kids and adults fall in love with fitness and understand the importance of daily movement through the power of martial arts.

Everyone is welcome

Flow is a community that prides itself on inclusivity: all are welcome regardless of age, race, gender, experience, or ability. We strive to foster a positive and friendly environment for students — from all walks of life — to learn combat sports.

The vibe of the gym IS filled with warmth and funny banter. I 1000% Recommend parents and individuals drop into Flow Martial Arts.
you’ll witness something special.
